Prof. Dr. Demir was born in 1947 in Keban-Elazig, Turkey. He is married and has two children.
He obtained his graduate degree as a biologist from the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Istanbul, Turkey (1969). He then obtained his “lecturership for biology” degree from “İstanbul Yüksek Öğretmen Okulu” (1969).
He worked as an Instructor of Biology at Elazig High School in Elazig, Turkey (1969-1972); as a Lecturer of Biology at the Institute of Education in Diyarbakır, Turkey (1972-1974); as a Teaching Assistant of Histology and Embryology in the Faculty of Medicine at Dicle University in Diyarbakır, Turkey (1974-1978); as a Graduate Fellow in the Department of Histology and Embryology, Istanbul Medical Faculty of the Istanbul University, Turkey (1975-1978); as a Lecturer (1979-1982) in the Department of Histology and Embryology, Antalya Medical Faculty of the Ankara University, Turkey and thereafter an Associate Professor (1982-1983) of Histology and Embryology in the Faculty of Medicine at the Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey. He then became a Lecturer (docent) (1983) and the Chairman and Head of the Department of Histology and Embryology (1983), a full-time Professor (1988), in Medical Faculty at Akdeniz University in Antalya, Turkey.
Prof. Dr. Demir is currently a member of the Turkish Electron Microscopy Society, the Turkish Histology and Embryology Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the New York Academy of Sciences (NAS), and the European Placenta Group (EPG).
Prof. Dr. Demir has published more than 160 full length original articles and 250 abstracts in reputed national and international journals since 1979. He has presented his research work on more than 30 occasions in international meetings since 1984. He has written six (6) textbooks and translated (3) others for medical students and postgraduate scientists, and has also published seven (7) books on various paramedical topics. His publications have received more than 450 citations, of which 105 have been by renowned scientists. Twenty four of his articles have been referred to in textbooks on 19 occasions.
He has been the Head of the Research Student Group, Faculty of Medicine, Akdeniz University, Antalya (1988-1994.); Chairman of the Institute of the Health Sciences (1996-2006), Member of the University Cenato (1996-2006).
He is a member of editorial boards of Acta Histochemica, Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences, Journal of Health Sciences and Turkish Clinical Sciences.
Prof. Dr. Demir was elected as a Fellow of the IAS in 2000.
