Prof. Boukhris was born on in 1940 in Tunisia. He is married with four children.

He obtained a Certificate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (1957) and an MD (1964), both from the University of Paris, France.  He was a Fulbright Scholar in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Chicago, USA (1966-1970). 

He was appointed Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Tunis Medical School (1974-1992), Chief of Service in Internal Medicine at Ernest Conseil Hospital in Tunis, Tunisia (1980-1992), and Director of the Research Centre in Human Reproduction in Tunis, Tunisia (1980-1992). 

Prof. Boukhris has been President of the Tunisian Society of Medical Sciences (1979-1982), and also Consultant (Human Reproduction Programmer) for the World Health Organisation (WHO) (1980-1990). 

He has authored a total of 115 articles and 224 scientific communications (regional and international). He is Founder-Director-Editor of the Revue Maghrébine d'Endocrinologie Diabète et Reproduction (1995-present). 

Prof. Boukhris was elected as a Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences in 1988.
