Prof. Jawad A. Salehi is the founder and the pioneer of a very important multiple access technique in optical fibre networks namely Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA). In this capacity, he was able to introduce for the first time a class of sequences used solely in optical CDMA namely Optical Orthogonal Codes (OOC). He was among the first researchers in the world to demonstrate the fundamental principles of optical CDMA networks using OOCs and he was the author of a series of papers on this issue which up to now have received over 1600 citations. Furthermore, in this capacity, he and his colleagues were among the first groups in the world back in 1988 to demonstrate for the first time the encoding and decoding of femto-second pulses. Later Dr Salehi and his colleagues worked on the theoretical aspects of this very exciting and clever technique which essentially took the communications/optical scientific societies by surprise. In that paper they were able to conclude that Optical CDMA networks based on femto-second encoding and decoding techniques can accommodate over hundreds of users each carrying over 1 Giga bits per second information rate. His work has resulted in him acquiring over 450 citations. He has been named as one of the most cited scientists in computer science category by Institute of Scientific Information Web of Knowledge (ISI Highly cited) – Thomson.
Currently Dr Salehi is at the Electrical Engineering Department of Sharif University of Technology as a full professor. He is also the director of Optical Networks Research Laboratory (ONRL) and has been for the past 5 years. His ONRL Laboratory has succeeded in publishing over 40 IEEE journal papers for the past eight years and has been recognized worldwide as a leading research group in Optical CDMA.
He was elected as a Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences in 2009.
