Born on September 5, 1926, Dr Kamel Mahmoud studied at Cairo University where he was awarded a DSc in Chemistry in 1975. He held the following positions:
Demonstrator: Chemistry Department, Faculty of Sciences, Cairo University (1948-1954);
Lecturer: Chemistry Department, Faculty of Sciences, Cairo University (1954-1957);
Member of a mission of the National Research Centre in Switzerland (1957-1960);
Research Assistant Professor, National Research Centre, (1960-1964);
Research Professor and Head of Textile Research Division, National Research Centre (1964-1974);
President of the National Research Centre (1974-1984);
President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (1984-1986);
Research Professor, Egypt National Research Centre (1986-to date).
He published over 100 papers in national and international journals and conferences in the field of Organic and Textile Chemistry and in Science Policy and supervised a number of PhD and MSc.
After he established the first Egyptian Research Unit in Textile Chemistry in 1960, Dr Kamel pioneered the establishment of linkages between Research and Industry from 1960 to 1974, supervised the establishment of: Theodor Bilharz Research Institute; the Eye Diseases Research Institute, the Electronic Research Institute and the Renewable Energy Research Station in Cairo, and introduced modern R&D management in the National Research Center.
Dr Kamel Mahmoud is currently or formerly a member of:

The Egyptian Chemical Society;
He was presented with the following awards:
State Prize of Chemistry (1965);
Order of Republic (Third Grade, 1965);
Order of Merit (First Grade with Star) from the Federal Republic of Germany (1979);
Order of Science and Art (First Grade, 1981).
Prof. Mahmoud is a Founding Fellow of the Islamic Academy of Sciences (1986), and Vice-President
